Manchester United will go to Cyprus on Thursday to face Omonia Nicosia in the UEFA Europa League. The Cypriots were defeated by Sheriff Tiraspol and Real Sociedad in their first two group round games.
Omonia have won two league games in a row since their 2-1 loss to Real Sociedad, defeating Paralimni and Doxa.
Neil Lennon’s players have also kept a clean sheet in both games, which is a positive sign ahead of their big encounter against Manchester United.
They desperately need a positive outcome since another defeat in Group E would be too difficult to overcome.
They will be trying to inflict pain on their injured opponents, who will be depressed after losing 6-3 to Manchester City on Sunday.
The Red Devils were completely destroyed by their cross-city rivals last Sunday, falling to a 4-0 hole in the first half.
Pep Guardiola’s team ran wild at the Etihad Stadium, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden scoring hat-tricks. A worldie from Antony and a brace from Anthony Martial gave the Red Devils some solace, but it was a mainly ineffective effort from Ten Hag’s side.
Fans will be hoping to see a response from their side on Thursday and United have a great chance to bounce back against relatively weaker opposition.
Sheriff Tiraspol absolutely outplayed Omonia Nicosia in their first Europa League group round game. Real Sociedad defeated them despite the absence of numerous first-team players.
Manchester City may have humiliated United in the Premier League. However, Thursday’s European opponents will be easy to contain. We expect United to take all three points.
